Dr. Khem Bahadur Karki

Founding Member - Research & Clinical Trial Expert

Dr. Khem B Karki holds the esteemed role of Founding Chairperson at Anusandhan, Shikshya ra Bikash Nepal, also known as ASB Nepal. Recognized for his exceptional leadership, Dr. Karki has established himself as an outstanding researcher, policy developer, and strategic thinker. His expertise spans diverse domains, including Clinical Research, Sexual and Reproductive Health, which includes Comprehensive Sexuality Education, Non-communicable Diseases, and Human Resource for Health. Additionally, he currently serves as the Department Head of Public Health at the Institute of Medicine (IoM), TU.

Educationally, Dr. Karki holds a Master's degree in Public Health and a Graduation degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from IoM, TU. Complementing his medical background, he has earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism from Nepal Press Institute, Graduate in Economics and an MA in English Literature from TU.

Dr. Karki plays a pivotal role as the Founding Chair of the Society for Local Integrated Development Nepal (SOLID Nepal), a pioneering non-governmental organization dedicated to eradicating child marriage and enhancing sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Collaborating with Government Agencies, EU, PSR-Finland, UN agencies, WHO, Dr. Karki brings over 25 years of experience in academia, research, and development to his impactful initiatives. Noteworthy among his accomplishments, Dr. Karki served as the Country Principal Investigator for two Clinical Trials on COVID-19 vaccines in Nepal, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to public health initiatives.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Karki served as the Co-Principal Investigator for a National Survey identifying Major Risk Factors for Non-communicable Diseases in Nepal. Additionally, he also served the role of Principal Investigator for a project focusing on Human Resources for Health in Nepal, showcasing his extensive experience in leading diverse research projects. He has an extensive involvement in health related research projects and has published more than 3 dozens of peer reviewed papers in different international index journals.

Beyond his research endeavors, Dr. Karki has been instrumental in shaping national policies, plans, and toolkits on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), HIV/AIDS, and Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs). He was the key person for developing National Health Policy 2014, National Strategy and Costed Action Plan for Ending Child Marriage, 2015, ASRH Implementation Guide and so many other policy documents. Moreover, he holds key positions as a member of the Health and Physical Education Subject Committee at the Curriculum Development Centre, MOE, and contributes to the Steering Committee for the 'Assessment of Decentralized District Health System' under MOHP. Dr. Karki's multifaceted contributions and leadership underscore his profound impact on healthcare, research, and policy development in Nepal.
